Genuine astronomy. Occasional nonsense.

What is a galaxy?

A galaxy is a vast system of stars, gas and dust, held together by gravity. Dark matter also contributes to the gravitational structure. Our Sun lives in one: the Milky Way.

A galaxy is not a solar system

A solar system centres on a star and the objects orbiting it. A galaxy contains enormous numbers of stars and their systems. When you choose a galaxy here, your gift celebrates something on a completely different scale.
